Reimagining the Fish Market

After six decades at Blackwattle Bay, the Sydney Fish Market has entered a new chapter. The original site in Pyrmont has been replaced by a purpose-built facility next door, designed to support a market that had outgrown its former footprint.

The new building opened to the public on 19 January 2026, with NSW Premier Chris Minns joined by ministers to cut the ribbon. Four years in development, Safetech worked together with construction firm Multiplex and design studios BVN and ASPECT Studios to supply technological solutions for the revamp.

From the first hours of opening, the market settled quickly into its rhythm. Vendors prepared fresh seafood, while restaurants served early diners and handed out special day-one samples. The critical infrastructure supporting daily operations immediately began ensuring produce levels remained high for the six million anticipated annual visitors.

Safetech’s loading dock systems and 12 custom-built freight hoists form a critical link between delivery areas and market floors. Built for coastal conditions, the hoists feature stainless steel finishes and integrated drainage to manage water and waste safely. One unit is designed to lift up to five tonnes, allowing forklifts to move between levels when required, while the inflatable EcoDock shelters help maintain temperature control within logistics zones.

For Safetech, the project represents years of coordination and hard work across manufacturing and installation teams, working within a complex construction schedule. For Sydney, it marks the arrival of a market designed not just to impress, but to function efficiently on a scale.

As crowds continue to gather along the harbour, the new Sydney Fish Market stands as the key public destination in this developing waterfront district, built to serve the city for decades to come.
